Gym workout vs playground workout: pros and cons

It’s springtime and you have to choose between a gym workout and a playground workout. If you ask me, I prefer the gym as my main place for training. But there was a time when I was working out all spring and summer only on the sports ground. So, I can assure you that every training location has its benefits. On the flip side, if you are used to a gym workout, you will need time to adapt to the sports ground routine. And vice-versa. 

I propose not to shelve it and figure out together what are the pros and cons of the gym workout and playground workout. Hope this helps you make the right choice.

I love my gym. Because this place is like a second home for me. In addition, there is a remarkable atmosphere in the gym, thanks to which training is more productive.

Well, now more specifically about the gym workout benefits:

  • Any fair fitness club has a wide choice of equipment. From treadmills and rowing machines to dozens of dumbbells, barbells, and kettlebells.
  • The gym is always comfortable. No matter what’s the weather outside the window, suffocating heat or bitter cold spells.
  • You can find mates or new friends there who will spot you in hard exercises. And in general, it is fun to train hand in hand.
  • If you don’t have enough training experience or motivation, you can find a trainer in the gym. He will help you to dive into the workout routine and avoid mistakes.

However, there are some disadvantages of the gym workout:

  • If the gym is far from your home or work, you will have to go there especially. It can be tiresome.
  • You will need to pay for each visit to the gym or buy a membership. Of course, this is not a huge amount of money, but not everyone wants to put their hand into pocket for sports.
  • There may be too many visitors in the gym. Especially in the evening. As for me, I don’t like crowds and it annoys me.
  • Your gym can change owners, wherefore the quality of its services will become worse. This happened to my favorite fitness center where I was a client for 6 years. As a result, I had to look for a new gym for workouts. 

The playground is a space of freedom. It will take you any time of the year and 24/7. Therefore, some athletes train only there. But outdoor training also has its nuances.

To start, let’s talk about the main playground workout advances:

  • If you live in the city, there are sports fields most likely at almost every turn. All you have to do is get off the couch and go to work out.
  • The sports ground is open round the clock and access is free. So you do not need to buy a membership or spend money on it.
  • If you’re into calisthenics, then a playground might be better for you than a gym. Oddly enough, many gyms aren’t equipped with a fair number of pull-up bars and p-bars. Or they are extremely uncomfortable.
  • When you are on a sports ground you are exercising in the open air. And this is a special feeling. Any gym can give it to you.

Of course, sports ground workouts also have downsides: 

  • On the playground, you will have to train in any weather. No matter if there’s rain, snow, or heat. Far from everybody is ready for such acts of bravery.
  • Bargain for a limited set of inventory. Not all sports grounds are equipped with something other than pull-up bars, p-bars, and wall bars.
  • The people around will be watching out of the corner of eyes. I, for one, don’t care what somebody thinks about me. But others’ views can be distracting.
  • You may have difficulties with such things as easing yourself, getting water, or washing your hands. Yes, this may sound funny. But such occasions can ruin your workout.
